I think of historic building conservation as repair; the work should be done as though the repairer were from the culture that created the historic resource, leaving only subtle clues to date the repair.

There should be an expectation that the building will last for centuries and deteriorate as itself, and any work should consider the situation that will face those asked to do repair in the future.
